Today’s companies understand the value of project management – ensuring quality projects are delivered on time and on budget. But while organizations have embraced project management to deliver individual projects successfully, many of these same organizations struggle with competing priorities, limited resources, and dependencies between these projects. We may deliver successfully, but are we delivering the right projects at the right time?
Focusing only on project delivery misses the bigger picture. Essentially, you can only see the trees.
Program management helps you also see the forest.
Through program management, savvy companies find the answers to important questions: How are projects related? Of all of our projects, which is most important? If we did nothing else this year – what are the top 10 projects that must be completed? Do we understand the risks for the entire program in addition to understanding the risks for each project?
Proper project management will ensure the completion of a specific objective, say, increasing customer counts. But what if we find our bad debt is rising because of the kind of customers we are taking on? A second project is launched to reduce the bad debt. Where does this new project fit in our priorities?
If we understood our objectives across both increasing customer counts and decreasing bad debt, we would drive efficiencies by beginning a single project designed to achieve both the related objectives.
Add to the mix - Enter new markets and introduce new products. How does that change our program make-up?
Program management delivers solutions to enable us to see how these projects relate to each other, ensure the projects are on target to achieve an organization’s overall objectives and meet the objectives for each stakeholder more efficiently.
This is how program management manages the forest. Developing an overall program of projects directs the bigger picture, delivering more value with existing resources. Do you realize the value you are achieving – and can achieve – out of your company’s project delivery?
Program management methods could be employed to guide an entire company’s projects, or to oversee a “mega” project that requires a multitude of sub-projects. Without an effective program management system, individual projects are in jeopardy of playing tug-of-war for company resources, potentially resulting in inefficiencies that can be costly to any size firm.
